Hi All! I am Sue Everson and I am a web and blog designer as well as a budding naturalist. This blog was created to document my journey as I learn about various native prairie plant species, native wild animals and natural earth formations of Kane County, Illinois.
I moved to the western side of Elgin with my husband 2 years ago from Chicago. I grew up in Highland Park (the snooty North Shore of Chicago) and my husband grew up here in Elgin. This area amazes me… so many nifty creeks and natural areas… and FARMS! Less than a mile to the west of us are working farms. There is a farm nearby with Shetland ponies and another farm advertises… eggs… paid on the honor system We even have a few alpaca and llama farms in the area.
My husband and I see this area a bit differently. I am fascinated by the natural areas in this place even though most of what I call “natural” is farm. My husband (a native Elginite) sees the extra traffic and remembers when there used to be no stop lights on certain roads because they were so rural.
We live by Fitchie Creek forest preserve. Some nights we can hear coyotes howling. I always like to hear them. I find them reassuring.
more to come….
